Those Around Us

I use illustration, ceramics, and printmaking processes to tie my desire to preserve our local environment to the value of handmade items. I want to emphasize the importance of local ecology in a world that prioritizes development- resulting in the loss of biodiversity and nature. Those Around Us is a 200+ piece ceramic tile wall-hanging; decorated with imagery of North Carolina's plants and wildlife. I chose to use a slip-transfer process for both works, where colored slip and underglaze are painted onto newsprint. These slip designs are then applied to leather-hard clay: resulting in strikingly colorful imagery.
